Abdallah and the Martyrs Cup
The championship trophy from this year’s 27th annual Palestine Martyrs Championship sits on the table beside my computer. Nadal set it down here for a few moments, removing it from its usual place at the front of the room. The mirror from its silver curved sides reflects my ten fingers racing across the keyboard in this solitary moment that I have away from the hustle and bustle of the refugee camp that expands beneath the windows of the 4th floor restaurant. This table and this chair have become my office in the Ibdaa Cultural Center, a community organization located in the Dheisheh Refugee Camp of the West Bank, Palestine. A quick glance out the window shows the rising white and grey brick and stone buildings placed side by side, peppered with grey and black water storage units. A montage of unequal, cramped, unembellished homes thrown into any space available. Shifting my thoughts away from the scene outside, my mind wanders to what this simple basketball trophy means in a world I don’t yet understand.read more »

The procession swept across the bridge and nobody noticed when little Liv stumbled and fell. Nobody heard her scream as she slid into the marsh, nobody smelt her sweat as she squelched into the slime.read more »

One Hundred Blind Dates To Meet Prince Right

0
points
In the nineties, before dating websites became as popular as they are now, the voice introduction personal ads in the newspaper were one way to meet the opposite sex. "What a great way to meet my soul mate," I thought, looking over two full pages of ads from men and women describing themselves with a brief paragraph. But soon I discovered this method of seeking Prince Right was as easy as choosing a jury for the O.J. Simpson trial – a verdict reached after nearly one hundred uncomfortable, though interesting and somewhat unique, blind dates.read more »

Can you believe it? After a year and 9 months of ‘Teachering’ English in Korea your boy goes to jail on account'a da weeeeed!? Early July my very good boy Ralph escaped his insane girlfriend for Africa. When she made her midday saunter to an internet café July 5th, we rushed the house for all his belongings. In a matter of a few hours Ralph and I had pillaged his place of his most prized possessions and he was on a plane to Bangkok where I met him a day later. We knew very well that his now, finally EX-girlfriend, Uri, would be upset by these sudden changes and thought it best to be extra cautious upon our return to Seoul in August.read more »

A Mother's Worst Nightmare...and Greatest Blessing

Justin - "Today"
I have always treasured the joys of motherhood, but one particular day will be marked in my memory forever... I became witness to a horrific automobile accident several years ago involving my 5 year old son, Justin. If I could go back and video-tape that horrible moment after all these years, I would. Just so other people out there who have no clue of who God really is, or may have never clung to their own faith with white knuckles while feeling like their heart was being ripped from their soul. I had always been a God-fearing, Bible-believing person before this ever took place; however, in spite of this fact God had a lesson for me to learn that day.read more »

A Night On The Town

A Night on the Town Oh no, she’s giving me The Look. We’re in Roger’s room, his smoky poky room. Not much of a place to spend Saturday night at uni, but I don’t know anyone else. And I have been slogging over my maths all day. So I reckoned if I took her out for a pint or five – I paid of course – then we pop in for a chat with Roger...read more »

MY NEW NICHE

0
points
MY NEW NICHE I always wanted to do something in life that was helpful, meaningful and rewarding for others as well as for myself. I had big ideas and big dreams. I always pictured myself as some sort of business tycoon or legislator. Whatever I was going to be, I wanted to make a major difference in the lives of ordinary men, women and children. I was young back then, and falling in love, dropping out of college, marrying and starting a family at a young age, changed and repressed my desire to be a noted, valuable, helping, contributor to society. I instead became a United Auto Worker, working in an assembly plant making cars, vans and trucks. It sure was not what I wanted or planned, but I ended up enjoying the work and the pay and benefits were excellent and much needed.read more »

MY FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL

0
points
It was cold that morning. I believe it was the first frost of the year. I remember I left my converse tennis shoes on the back porch. The chickens were all waking up, crowing and cackling, wanting something to eat. As I was standing there taking in the morning with the wonder of a little boy, mom yelled, “Get in here boy, you’re going to be late for your first day of school,” so I sat down on the porch step to put my shoes on before I went into the kitchen where mom was. “Shut the door honey, you’ll let the heat out,” mom said. Captain Crunch Berry, toast with orange marmalade, and milk for breakfast, mom never had to tell me to eat well. That’s something I took to without a problem. So, with my breakfast gone, I am looking through the cereal box trying to find the toy, a Captain Crunch spinning top. Mom was there again. “Come on son! Go wash your face and hands now.”read more »

Coo Coo Ca Choo, Mrs. Robinson

I must have been in my early twenties when I first saw Anne Bancroft seduce Dustin Hoffman in the 1967 film The Graduate. I remember the silent smirk on my face that whispered, "Ah-Ha. I get it!" while feeling empowered by the passive-aggressive control she commanded from a guy almost half her age. She was in charge, it was evident, and I liked it. A lot.read more »
